Righteous Babe Records: "school is in session"

Pay it Forward appears to be the anthem of Righteous Babe Records and it's owner, Ani Difranco. Known for her feirce determination to succeed, Difranco has created a breeding ground for other indie artists to thrive.

"My priorities are politics and art and people. That is why I've stayed away from the major record companies. So it wasn't some kind of brilliant 15-year business plan."
Ani Difranco - CEO

Alrighty now, pull out a sheet of paper and lick the tip of the pencil. You’re about to get educated on how to be “every major label’s worst nightmare.”

Step one: pick up a guitar, play anywhere for nine years and speak your mind. Step two: don’t dwell on your teenage status but rather plop $50 bucks down on the table, give your new company a cool name, and truly own it. Step three: tour, tour and tour again all the while spouting ideas that will guarantee no radio station will play you from the mainstream market. Step five: Don’t forget the little people, but give them the voice needed to use their own voices. And most importantly, create a label that has heart and soul.

Righteous Babe Records has thrived in the 15 years since its inception. Its owner, Ani Difranco, has shown that we don’t have to use Grandma Industry’s Cook Book for success anymore. There is an audience of poetic, intelligent, political listeners out there. There are talented artists from all genres with the same "agenda." She's proved that running a label that is more concerned about the global heartbeat than the bottom line can survive.

So for doing everything “wrong” but showing it can be “oh so right” we tip our hats to you Righteous Babe for being a standard in Independent Music.
